  1. He looks like a little baby bull, or like a baby whose snotty nose turned into silver... I'm just hoping and praying it's Photoshop.

  2. Actually, it looks for real.
From the FAQ: The removal of jewelry (pierced with a hollow needle) during childhood will allow for many years of healing and the marks will hardly be noticable in a few years. A child's skin is much more resilient than an adult's. No modification that we do is "permanent" in the sense that it can't be removed. What is more wrong: adorning your child with jewelry that can be removed later if the child so chooses, or cutting off a baby boy's foreskin which will never grow back?
By the way, I noticed infants routinely get pierced ears in Spain.

  3. this is beyond dumb. Why would any parent want to do this?

I hope this is photoshop too, but I'm sure that a parent out there did this because he or she thought, why not? Other parents pierce their children's ears, circumicise their sons (or daughters), bind their children's feet so that they do not grow to the size they would otherwise grow, etc., so why can't I do whatever I want to do to my child?
The answer is because it is selfish to make a "counter-culture statement" out of your nonconsenting child. Clearly children are products of their cultures and the enculturation process (i.e. what they're parents, friends, teachers etc. teach them). Nevertheless, generally the goal of most parents is to teach their children culturally appropriate values and behaviors. If most people in our society pierced their babies' faces in addition to piercing their babies' ears, then you wouldn't be being so selfish. You would be behaving what was appropriate for your society. However, since you are not, it seems to me you must be trying to make a statement. Correct me if in fact, you are not trying to make a statement.
